Happy Valentines Day cookies

all set to bake

I did a little amendment to this recipe.  These are actually one of my and my childrens favorite Christmas cookies called Candy Canes.

I love the almond flavoring in these cookies and decided they are not just for Christmas.  So I shaped them into hearts instead 🙂

Here is the recipe:

1 c butter
1 c powdered sugar
1 egg
1-1/2 t almond extract
1 t vanilla extract
2-1/2 c flour
1 t salt
1/2 t red food coloring
Mix the butter and sugar until creamy.  Add egg and flavorings.  Add salt and flour, slowly and mix well between additions.
Divide dough in half and add the food coloring to one half.  (I put the dough in the refrigerator for a bit to harden, so they are easier to work with when rolling.)
Take a teaspoon of each dough and roll to about 4″ long.    Twist them together and form a heart and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake in 375 degree oven for about 9 minutes or until barely tinged with tan on edges.
I drizzled some melted chocolate on some and some strawberry preserves on some.

Are there any special recipes you are making for Valentine’s Day?
